HinnRYK, a captivating Icelandic musical duo, made their mark on the scene in 2024 with an irresistible mix of funk, pop, R&B, and rap. The group consists of two uniquely talented artists: The Baron, based in Iceland, and Daniel Gray, living in Norway. Both bring powerful musical and life experiences to the project, resulting in a sound that defies easy categorization. The Baron: Music, Rock, and the Fight Against Parkinson’s
The Baron grew up in Stokkseyri, a small village in Iceland’s 825 district with about 500 inhabitants. He showed an early passion for music, casually singing along to songs by Duran Duran, Electric Light Orchestra, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. At 13, he bought his first keyboard, but three years later gave it up and moved to Reykjavík, where he began singing in his first band. Soon after, he started writing lyrics, first for that band, then for every group he joined. Most of his bands leaned heavily toward rock, a genre close to his heart, and he mostly composed melodies. In recent years, his songwriting has expanded significantly, with around 150 finished and unfinished songs. His life changed drastically in 2017 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which hit him hard for a time. Today, The Baron has declared war on the illness, even if he knows that ultimately, he might lose the battle.
Daniel Gray: From Reykjavík Streets to Musical Exploration
Daniel Gray grew up in Reykjavík’s 111 district. His musical journey began almost by accident, when a friend dared him to write rap lyrics. Though skeptical of his own abilities, Daniel took the challenge, and quickly became obsessed. He soon found himself designing logos, crafting concepts, and inventing new ways to wake people up. The streets buzzed with life: basketball and football games were nonstop, and the energy in the air was palpable. Even as his sound evolved, his punk influences never left him. They’re present in every lyric, every musical shift, giving his work sharpness and edge. Surrounded by Iceland’s harsh natural elements and unique cultural history, it’s no surprise these textures shine through in his music. Deeply influenced by Iceland’s literary heritage, both nationally and within his family, Daniel kept a notebook close during college, filling it with 4–5 new texts each day. Three-verse, sixteen-bar structures poured out regularly, as he seized every opportunity to sharpen his craft. Discovering the C major chord on the piano opened an entirely new dimension for him, and creating beats became a lifelong passion. Raised in a religious household, his first stage appearance was in church. From there, he branched out, rapping with rock bands, performing over his own beats, and even collaborating with a gospel choir on occasion.
